STEP 6 - DILUTION

There are two terms you will want to know when applying your Essential Oils TOPICALLY: “DILUTION” and “NEAT.”

Oils classified as NEAT can be applied topically without dilution because of their exceptionally mild chemistry.

HOWEVER, neat application is NOT recommended for senior adult skin.

But here’s what you can do. “DILUTION” is a process in which Essential Oils are mixed with a CARRIER OIL (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) that helps carry the Essential Oil onto the skin.

There are many benefits to diluting Essential Oils. Dilution is one of the MOST IMPORTANT aspects of effective topical application. When used properly, carrier oils have been shown to IMPROVE Essential Oil topical application through several different pathways. It provides a more complete absorption, allowing the oils to remain localized in the tissues for longer, thus providing greater benefit.

Older skin can be more sensitive, and Essential Oils, while very SAFE and NATURAL, are extremely potent, and must be diluted appropriately to maximize their therapeutic benefits and minimize the possibility of unwanted skin reactions.

For elderly skin, less is more, and a lower dose dilution used consistently can be very beneficial to the skin, helping to strengthen it so that it remains a healthy, protective barrier for the body.

Essential Oils should be diluted with a carrier oil, such as our FRACTIONATED COCONUT OIL; or you can use the HAND & BODY LOTION. Fractionated Coconut Oil is our carrier oil of choice due to its long shelf life, odorless quality that doesn’t deter from the Essential Oil aroma, and lightweight texture.

To ensure you are using Essential Oils properly on Seniors skin, follow these dilution guidelines:

  • 1% DILUTION: 1 drop Essential Oil to 1 tsp. (5 ml) carrier oil.

  • 2% DILUTION: 2 drops Essential Oil to 1 tsp. (5ml) carrier oil.

  • 3% DILUTION: 3 drops Essential Oil to 1 tsp. (5ml) carrier oil.

1% dilution is safe for SENIOR adults, children under the age of two, pregnant women, those with sensitive skin or compromised immune systems or other serious health issues, and when you are massaging over a large area of the body. This dilution ration can be used on a daily basis.

2% dilution can be used for senior adults if the skin is in GOOD condition and is not too thin, fragile, or broken.

3% dilution is best for SHORT TERM use for a temporary health issue, such as a muscle injury or respiratory congestion. Consider the AGE of the person, the HEALTH concern, and the OILS being used. Every individual is unique. As the issue resolves, reduce the dilution amount back to 1–2%.

CAUTION: DO NOT attempt to apply Essential Oils to broken skin, injured skin, or open wounds. Although some Essential Oils can be applied neat to the skin, this is likely to damage older skin or cause a reaction.

QUESTION – WHICH DILUTION RATIO WILL YOU USE MOST IN YOUR HOME?
